LOST: A Theory

What’s Left?

Alright, this is probably my last attempt to write a theory for the remaining episodes (aka season 6) of LOST and how it could all end. Needless to say it contains spoilers for season 1 to 5 including “The Incident”, which is going to be the junction point of my thoughts.
What exactly happened after Juliet hit Jughead and that bright white light emerged, sending us off into the last hiatus? Did the bomb explode?  Did Jack and Faraday’s plan to create a new, possibly altered, timeline work? How does it all end?

Knowing Darlton’s love to mess with the minds of their audience and keeping the narrative structure of the last season similar to all previous seasons, season 6 will show both possible outcomes simultaneously: First, a “new” timeline presumably created by Jughead, in which anyone who previously died is alive again. Second, the continuation of the on-island story. The flashbacks/flash-forwards in season 6 will be replaced by flashes to the “newly” created timeline. The present timeline will continue right after the bright white light vanished and we’ll see Jack & Co back in 2007 staring down the imploded Dharma Swan hatch. What does this mean? The flash brought the survivors back from 1977 to 2007, similar to the flash that transported Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid from Ajira316 to Dharma times. The cause of the flash is NOT Jughead’s detonation, to be honest I’ve no idea who or what is responsible for it (Jacob? Electro-/magnetic properties of the island?). What I do “know” is, that Jughead did NOT explode after Juliet hit it, but after Desmond turned the failsafe key back in 2004 as seen in “Live Together, Die Alone”.  Yes, we have already seen its explosion 3 seasons/years ago, causing a never before seen event, which left Desmond flashing into his past. (Or did he?  I don’t want to digress from my original idea too much. This could very well be considered a new theory, but what if he was not flashing into his past and instead flashing into another timeline?) The uncontrolled release of electromagnetic energy below the Swan hatch combined with the detonation of the core of a hydrogen bomb (which is essentially a low yield thermonuclear bomb) resulted in an implosion, cancelling out the effects of a nuclear blast and whatever would have happened if the electromagnetic energy would have been set free all at once. Still, something else, very significant has happened here, the purple/violet sky a clear indicator.
What created this “new” timeline? The Big Bang if you want. Or something else, it’s not important for this theory. Important is: It was always there, it is in fact the original timeline. A split into two different timelines occurred when Oceanic Flight 815 entered the vicinity of the island and crashed on it. The events played out since Oceanic815 crashed, are manipulated and in part manufactured by Jacob. He is somehow aware of the original timeline and he will use both, 815 crash timeline and original timeline, to destroy the Man in Black (MIB) once and for all – with the help of our Losties. We also learned Jacob believes humanity is ultimately good and he is set out to prove his point.
The predicament? Original timeline is doomed - it has an expiration date! The Dharma Initiative’s goal was to change the core numbers of the Valenzetti Equation, thus preventing the end of the world, but they ultimately failed.
The end of the world was the day Desmond turned the failsafe key. The purple sky event is the manifestation of the complete annihilation of one of the timelines – the original one – leaving only the 815 crash timeline intact. Jacob and the Losties will somehow transfer MIB’s electromagnetic manifestation to the original timeline before it will be destroyed, trapping him there. Our Losties in the original timeline – alive, happy and content- will become aware of the 815 crash timeline and after confronted, decide to help Jacob voluntarily, sacrificing their lives in the process and proving Jacob’s thesis right.
The 815 crash timeline will culminate in an epic battle between MIB and Jack, during which Jack will give his life, but not before sending MIB over to the original timeline, knowing that he cannot be destroyed by conventional means.
The Snake in the Mailbox (aka the final scene and ultimate twist); from a writers perspective: With the disappearance and destruction of MIB and the last living human on island - JACK-  closing his eyes one final time, the island has fulfilled its purpose and vanishes into a final flash of bright white light into a place unknown to our existence.
We cut to a crowded New York Street in bright daylight:  A tall, handsome man buys the latest newspaper from a friendly saleswoman – The man? It’s JACK! Alive. He is going down the street seemingly lost in thoughts as he studies the newspaper. He stops. Looking into the clear blue sky, smiling. Suddenly he turns, looks over his shoulder, searching for something, SOMEONE? Across the street she’s walking, almost running. Now slower, until she comes to a halt and turns looking directly into his eyes. A woman - brunette, strikingly beautiful with piercing green eyes – KATE! They’re walking towards one another now. Slowly and carefully yet full of longing and … recognition? A single tear leaves Kate’s eye when he is standing right in front of her. She smiles and Jack takes her small, beautiful face carefully in his hands. They close eyes and engage in a kiss as the world around them seems to stop turning.

Cut to black --- LOST ---

What happened? We’ve seen a new timeline, independent of the 815 crash timeline and independent of the original timeline. A timeline where the island, the smoke monster and Jacob never existed. Yet our characters do – they are the same people we went on a journey together for six years. They may have no memories of their island lives (open for interpretation), but they are inevitably drawn to each other, as if they have lived a thousand lives before and always found one another.
